Can someone explain the dynamics of what happens at a cattle ranch (America)?

March 242011

I’m writing a story that’s set in about 1860-1870 in Colorado and I need the details of how a cattle ranch would work. Like how much land it would require, how many staff and horses and equipment as well as the calendar of what happens – any of the info i need would be appreciated!
Fisherman, that would be very useful but i’m in the middle of exams – any chance of just telling me?

come to Texas and Ill show ya

Ronald to purchase land in South America and start a cattle ranch. Which location is best suited for this act?

March 222011

a.the Pampas
b.the Atacama
c.Amazon Basin
d.the Andes

a)The Pampas, that is!
Why not the others, let’s see…
b)The Atacama is a desert, the cattle would starve or thirst to death, not so good for a cattle ranch.
c)The Amazon Basin doesn’t have much clean and wide fields, it’s about dense forests with high humidity, not exactly what you are looking for your cattle.
d)The Andes are simply too high and steep, your cattle would be forced to go up and down everyday making them too muscular, and therefore bad if you want to sell their meat. Not to mention the weather in the Andes region is not exactly that comfy to your cattle.
Now that I excluded the impossible places for one to raise cattle, let’s see why you should pick the Pampas.
The Pampas is mostly a plain region, with friendly weather and rich in cattle food: grass, small bushes and pasture!
The Pampas’ region is located at the southern part of Brazil.

What would happen to the economy if every slaughterhouse, cattle ranch, butcher shop, and store that sold meat?

March 202011

….closed down tomorrow?
Paranoid much, TheHRchannel?

The economy would be in even worse shape than it is now. It would be worse than the great depression. Any business that had anything to do with meat would be in big trouble. Restaurants, charcoal, transportation industry, grocery stores, grills, and so on. But the purchasing of hunting supplies would grow dramatically.

Am wondering about owning a cattle ranch?

March 182011

I am 14 and want a career with ag, i have been raised around the enviorment with animals as in horses, cattle, dogs and swine. I love farming and want to pursue a career in ag.

What I am wondering is, how are the pro’s and con’s of cattle ranching? It is something i would be interested in and enjoy.
How much land would be needed for,, oh say, 100 head of cattle?

It would be HARD! And I mean hard. You need have healthy cattle and you will only get like 1 pay check year.. But if it’s what you would want to do for the rest of your life then do it.. Also there is this show called "The Last American Cowboy". You can look it up.. It basically shows you how hard it is to own a cattle ranch. And it has three different ranches on it.. I would say if it’s what you want go for it, you only have one life to live so you might as well do it how you want to.

*EDIT*
At least a couple hundred, when it comes to land you always want more then what you think you would need.. That also includes whatever you plan on feeding them during the winter and on vaccines.

in starting a cattle ranch what all is needed on the ranch?

March 162011

I am in the process of starting a cattle ranch of about 100 cows but will hire someone who knows more than I do. but do plan on taking some courses on the subject. My question is what all is need on the ranch to run it.Although I am not completly ignorant on the matter of cows,I have raised a few of them in the past.so I know a little about it.

With respect, go to your county extension service and talk to them. They will know what you need based on the soils, water-sources, plantings and so forth in your area.

And the type of cattle based on the climate and range area makes a huge difference as well.

Talk to other ranchers – look up your local Grange (if any), 4H Club (local high-school) and so forth. Perhaps even speak to the Club Manager about some mutually beneficial cooperative projects.

You will NOT get any sort of complete answer here.

How can I make cold spinach dip using cream cheese and no ranch or artichokes?

March 142011

Posted in ranch | 2 Comments »

I have been looking everywhere for a decent recipe but they all require ranch or artichokes which I can’t eat. It would be great if the recipe used cream cheese.

try all recipes. You can always just look at a recipe and take out the artichokes. I found this one for you. You can look on there because they have several

Ingredients
3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup cottage cheese
2 (14 ounce) cans spinach
1/4 cup diced onion
salt to taste
Directions
1.In a large bowl, blend the cream cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese. Mix in the spinach, onion and salt. Refrigerate 2 to 3 hours before serving.

What do you need to work on a ranch? and can i work on a ranch in the US if im not a citizen?

March 122011

Posted in ranch | 2 Comments »

I want to get qualifications first. But just in case I decide to work on a ranch for any reasons, would it be possible to work on one without a US citizenship?

Qualifications are simple you must be able to ride a horse for 10 to12 hours per day six days a week. Rope, brand and geld cattle, goats, and sheep. Repair fences illegals have cut or torn down, clean trash from range land ESP dirty diapers for some reason cattle eat the damn things. Repair windmills, grub and kill cholla cactus, weld to repair gates, and cook, clean, and maintain line shacks. Pack a mule effectually and basically live on your own for 28 days at a time.
Most of my ranch hands were on fourth or fifth generation working there and would have really resented me hiring an outsider ESP a non-citizen. They were Chicanos whose families had lived in Pecos River Valley for over four hundred years. All have family members looking for work. Chances of you getting sponsored for Green Card are effectively zero.

Where is the best place in America to have a horse ranch?

March 102011

I’m writing a story and I need to have just the right setting of where I need my horse farm. It has to be somewhere full of lush green hills. Lots of acres. Any help?
Ps. It has to be near a small town with a public school.
Sorry if this is a bit far fetched!
Hope I have the right catagory. If not tell me what you would recommend.

Depends.

I’m assuming by ‘ranch’ you imply that it’s a western farm.

If so, probably Nevada.

Kentucky or Montana are also good choices.
