im 17 and live in central pa. i ride any discipline, even extreme trail riding and freestyle. i have a lot of experience with inexperienced and green horses. as long as im around horses, i have neverending stamina. i need a job which will give me real life experience with what i want to do in my future, instead of wasting time and money for collage. i had plans to work on a few dude and guest ranches this summer, but was turned down because im not 18. area is not an issue, if you live across the us, all i need is room, food, and small pay, ill be just fine.

ill do anything im told. if you tell me to clean stalls (which im a pro at) with my hands, ill do it. i want to do this because of the experience i will gain. i dont want my summer to go to waste, please consider me. i can put together an application video and everything if thats what i need. if you cant hire me and know someone who can, please let them know about me! i have extensive experience with being a stablehand, feeding, turning out, exercising/working, giving beginner lessons, making people happy. i know nothing about cows, but i do learn fast if you really need work. thanks for looking! no mean comments please.

so far nothing is working out…nobody will contact me, or reply, or anything. i want this more than anything….please help.
i tried monster.com. looked nationally because i really wanna get out of this state and experience the world…and 99% of the jobs were for writers about pets..i tried in pa and most of the jobs which had nothing to do with horses were located in black horse pa…not very helpful. im sorry :/
all the farms within a one hour distance of where i live are either shut down, dont need a stablehand/rider, and i board my horse at a stable that has no stalls…so they obviously dont need a stablehand.

I can understand how much you want this, just be careful about making your decision. Not everyone is a very nice person and will take advantage of desperate dream fullfillers like you. Im not trying to burst your bubble – just trying to warn you.

Age is a big factor. If your 16 and under then most people won’t want to worry about housing some child. And yes your still a child. Your aren’t an adult until your 18. If you want this so bad, then you will need to learn to wait. Im sure you could get some experiance at a local horse farm, just call them up. Im sure someone will need a helping hand!

ANd trust me, things will come your way!

You sound like me 35 years ago. Looking back now, I really wish I had "wasted time and money with college". Working with horses has been a gas, but it hasn’t been a solid career and now that I’m sliding down the other side of that big hill, I don’t have much in the way of retirement security.

Buckle down now, find SOME career that will satisfy your mind and soul AND your bank account – it’s a lot more fun to be able to play with your own horses on your own farm, than to be forever boarding and needing to make do with the facilities that are available and within your financial reach. And of course, once you have your own place and financial base, you can more easily create an equine-based business, whether training, boarding, teaching riding, carriage rides, tack shop, whatever you want to do.

Of course, if you’re like I was, you’ll probably think you don’t need to follow some old fart’s advice, because you’ve got it all figured out – and in 35 years you’ll be saying this same thing to another horse-crazy kid!

I wish you all the best!

Could someone please help? I would like to stay in a guest ranch with fast paced riding available. We would like to stay either two or three nights. There is one in our group that is a teen (16) It would be ideal to charge per night/per room, and the rides be charged seperately. I am not interested in a one week camp. Prices should be reasonable. Please list the website and contact information. Thanks!

P.S. As much as I would love to stay at a ranch, if I can only ride for a half day/2 hour, it would be fine. (Fast paced riding included – I love to canter and nose to tail trail rides are no longer enjoyable as my riding experience has grown) Please list phone numbers/web sites.
Dig out your biggest belt buckle and get your boots ready ’cause you’re in cowboy country. Plenty of working guest ranches give you a chance to experience the cowboy life firsthand, and you may even get to drive cattle or mend fences. The two-lane, 150-mile Loup Rivers Scenic Byway is also heavily populated with rodeos that draw nationally known ropers and riders who put on quite a show.

This is also a great chance to explore nature’s splendor. Canoe or tank along the winding and glistening rivers as they cut through the lush and scenic terrain. Hunting and fishing is plentiful, and even those hunting the perfect photo will feel at home with rare wildlife sightings and the annual sandhill crane migration.

For a look at another facet of the area, tour the remnants of a past rich with the pioneering spirit and military tradition at Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park.

A rare gem lies undiscovered on the eastern flanks of the 12,000-foot La Sal Mountains near Moab, Utah. A surprising mountain retreat hidden in the midst of Utah’s redrock country, the La Sal Ranch sweeps across nearly 2,000 spectacular acres at elevations from 9,000 to nearly 11,000 feet. Stands of aspen and spruce/fir forests, large meadows and quiet glades, create a diverse landscape ideal for healthy populations of resident elk, mule deer and other wildlife. The upper elevations of the ranch stretch nearly to timberline, and views of the nearby high peaks are magnificent. Deep Creek, a small coldwater stream fed by snowmelt, traverses more than a mile of the ranch, provides life-giving water to wildlife, and may be home to rare Colorado River Cutthroat Trout. The ranch has numerous permanent springs that attract deer and elk as well.

Originally homesteaded in the early 1900’s, the La Sal Ranch has remained essentially undeveloped since then, with the exception of a few historic cabins and two access roads. The potential for developing this remarkably scenic property into a guest ranch, hunting and fishing lodge or recreational retreat is excellent, or it could be preserved as virtual wilderness through means of a conservation easement. The wealth of possibilities for the La Sal Ranch is as breathtaking as its mountain setting.

Nearly completely surrounded on four sides by National and State Forest lands, the La Sal Ranch provides a critical piece of wildlife habitat in the La Sal Mountains ecosystem. The ranch controls the approach to much of the eastern side of the La Sals, and offers virtually private access to the lovely timberline basins below Mount Tomasaki and Manns Peak. The La Sals are renowned for both trophy mule deer and elk hunting, with some especially fine bulls and bucks taken each year. Wild turkeys, mountain lions, black bears, coyotes and bobcats also roam here. Rare Colorado River Cutthroat trout have been documented in nearby Roc Creek and may survive in the waters on the ranch as well, as Deep Creek is a tributary of Roc Creek.

Some of the most astounding scenery in the United States lies within an hour’s drive of La Sal Ranch, ranging from the windswept peaks above treeline to echoing redrock canyons. Thus, diverse recreational opportunities abound. Mountain biking, horseback riding, four-wheeling, snowmobiling and cross country skiing are all possibilities both on the ranch and nearby public lands. Moab, a bustling small city and the recreation center of southeastern Utah, is only a little more that an hour’s drive. Canyonlands Airport serves Moab, and renowned Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are nearby. To the northeast lie the Colorado communities of Gateway (30 miles) and Grand Junction (90 miles). Telluride, Colorado with world-class skiing, is about 100 miles away. $6,500,000.
