all these answers every one gave you are very good pointers, but just remember to be happy and relaxed, horses do feel your emotions (when i first started riding i was nervous on a trail ride, horse was wacky, and i took a dive into rocks) just remember to have "quiet hands" im not sure if you’ve taken lessons… basically to keep the horse in line, but not pulling on their mouth constantly. and yes listen to what your instructers tell you, most dude ranch horses are old pro’s and dont spook at much but always be on your toes. happy trails! oh, ps, if your horse does start to buck and run away hold on to your horn to prevent his bucking smashing your hips into the front or the back of the saddle, you may pull some muscles, but its better than a broken hip or dislocated one at that!

Just remember that the horse feels any emotion you’re feeling. If you’re scared, he’s scared because he doesn’t know why you’re scared. Don’t ask too much of him and when he doesn’t do what you ask, don’t flip out and approach it another way. Rub the horse and talk to it before you get on.

ok i ride so heres what I do:

1. never get nervous if it spooks turn it around and around
2. sit never stand to stretch even he could spook and take off
3. where a helmet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4. if you fall keep hands on chest crosed if fallign on your back, i learned the hard way!
5.every horse has a bad day, so dont expect the best or the worst
6.get on with a good attitude sayign everythings going to be ok
7.hope it helps i have a 3 year old I ride and these help lots but hes not extra spooky so its good!

Obviously you know the basics of riding I wont bore you with that. Make sure you wear a helmet and take it nice and slow. Grab onto the horn if you need to and dont be afrai to grab some mane either.

Ask a riding instructor if he/she could teach you again. Research and/or ask your friends who ride questions.

The people at the ranch(Who run it or their ranch hands) Will tell you how to control the horse if you are not sure don't be afraid to ask.Also ask for a novice horse

Be careful, don't be quick around the horse (that could spook it) and always let the horse know where you're at and try to stay on the horse.

kay – a dude ranch is designed for people with zip riding experience. you’ll be fine. stay relaxed, listen to their instructions, be patient. I guarantee success. (their business is putting newbies on horses, they’re pros at it)

First- Relax, and have fun. If you tense up too much you’ll feel it the next day. Remember to keep your heels down and to sit into the saddle. Keep relaxed though, act like your sitting on your couch at home. don’t worry too much, the people that run the ranch have probably had millions of people with no idea, and will be able to help you out.

Don’t worry about it..you know what they say..riding a horse is just like riding a bike..once you learn, you never forget, I’m sure you’ll get the feel for it quicker than you think.
