I’m not looking for a guest ranch where I have to pay a couple hundred dollars to go there. I’m looking for a REAL WORKING RANCH… Somewhere I can go for a few months and stay for work not pay to stay. I don’t want an easy vacation, I want to work hard and learn some things about ranching, horses, and myself.
-thanks!
I live in Pennsylvania but transportation isn’t a problem, I’m looking for some names or a good web site with a few. And not just like a week, more like a month or a season

You might find something interesting through the organization called WOOF or Willing Workers on Organic Farms. They are world-wide, so you could acquire travelling and ranching experience all in one. http://www.wwoofusa.org/

Also I know of a CSA in (the aptly named) Buena Vista, Colorado called weathervane farms. You might get in touch with them as they have people work for them in the summer months. Have fun ; )

3) New Mexico (because of their history and culture)

I second Montana – actually it is much more beautiful than Wyoming. Once you get out of Yellowstone and east of Cody, WY it is mostly desert and sagebrush – pretty desolate and hot and not really very pretty at all. More of Montana is mountainous with more trees, grassland and less desert. Lots of large ranches with thousands of acres to explore.

Because of this, the outside is always swarmed with flies that ultimately find thier way into the house. Walking through our downstairs hallway looks like something out of a horror movie. Does anyone know how to control this problem?

Putting cotton balls on the screens will help.

Cloves hanging in bags will repel them.

A fan blowing on the door will deter the flies.

Baggies half filled with water hanging so the natural light can show through them on the porch and over the doors and where ever needed will repel the flies.

While living here I’ve found that a lot of things don’t actually go bad, we are just really spoiled Americans, haha. Thanks for the help!

>If the ranch has a preservative added, give it a shelf life of about 3 months unrefrigerated. Otherwise, if it has been out for more than 4-5 days, at room temp then toss it. You are right, we are spoiled alright, but we also live longer than a lot of people do in the world due to less food poisoning.

Similar idea to the nomadic life of US/Canadian, Argentinaian, and Australian "cowboys", but not at all like a dude ranch. (The "dude" in question refers to someone from a large city who knows absolutely NOTHING about "roughing it" or horses and therefore experience it vicariously – being led on horse rides and such.)

I’ve recently become very interested with farming and cattle. I want to start off as a cattle hand or a ranch hand but I have nooo experience. How much experience is required and what are the duties of such positions?

Generally cattle ranches want someone with at least some experience working around livestock (especially dairy farms), but it is not always necessary. Just be prepared to work long days (before sun up until after sun down), do hard work, and get a little dirty. As for the duties, that all depends on the place that hires you as to what they want you to do (but it can include feeding, moving, and assisting in branding). A willingness to work would be the biggest requirement (#1 complaint I hear from farm owners is their employees slacking off or not showing up on time).
