Can I serve dip made over a week ago?

April 102010

I made some dip 1-2 weeks ago. I used sour cream and a hidden valley ranch dip package. The use by date on the sour cream is 4/14/10, so that date is fine, but would this dip still be OK to serve guests since it’s been mixed up for a week or two?

Use by dates only pertain to unopened product. Once it is opened a new set of rules applies and the product should be used sooner than the use-by date. Having said that I think your dip would still be safe to eat. Stir the whey (watery stuff) around to recombine it with the dip. Milk and milk products have a ‘friendly’ bacteria which start to smell pretty strong after the product turns sour. If the dip smells bad, discard it.

    i would say yes.
but the dip may not taste as good a have as much flavor as it did when you first made it.
the dip may also be a bit watery/
but its completely harmless to eat. :)
