Is a barn with horses called a horse farm or a ranch?

January 312010

The other day my friend said horse farm and I didn’t think that was even possible to have a horse farm because I thought it was called a ranch. So is there such thing as a horse farm?

In the southwest, west, and southeast United States, many farmers refer to their land as a "ranch", whether or not they have horses.

In the Midwest & northeast United States, farmers typically refer to their land as a "farm".

The main difference is whether or not the land has both livestock and farmland. If it is just livestock, it is much more likely to be called a ranch (no matter where it is in the country). Beef and horse farmers are the most likely to label their farms as "ranches".
