A rare gem lies undiscovered on the eastern flanks of the 12,000-foot La Sal Mountains near Moab, Utah. A surprising mountain retreat hidden in the midst of Utah’s redrock country, the La Sal Ranch sweeps across nearly 2,000 spectacular acres at elevations from 9,000 to nearly 11,000 feet. Stands of aspen and spruce/fir forests, large meadows and quiet glades, create a diverse landscape ideal for healthy populations of resident elk, mule deer and other wildlife. Nearly completely surrounded on four sides by National and State Forest lands, the La Sal Ranch provides a critical piece of wildlife habitat in the La Sal Mountains ecosystem. The ranch controls the approach to much of the eastern side of the La Sals, and offers virtually private access to the lovely timberline basins below Mount Tomasaki and Manns Peak. The La Sals are renowned for both trophy mule deer and elk hunting, with some especially fine bulls and bucks taken each year. Wild turkeys, mountain lions, black bears, coyotes and bobcats also roam here. Rare Colorado River Cutthroat trout have been documented in nearby Roc Creek and may survive in the waters on the ranch as well, as Deep Creek is a tributary of Roc Creek.

Some of the most astounding scenery in the United States lies within an hour’s drive of La Sal Ranch, ranging from the windswept peaks above treeline to echoing redrock canyons. Thus, diverse recreational opportunities abound. Mountain biking, horseback riding, four-wheeling, snowmobiling and cross country skiing are all possibilities both on the ranch and nearby public lands. Moab, a bustling small city and the recreation center of southeastern Utah, is only a little more that an hour’s drive. Canyonlands Airport serves Moab, and renowned Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are nearby. To the northeast lie the Colorado communities of Gateway (30 miles) and Grand Junction (90 miles). Dude Ranch: Riding the Rockies

Slide show of a trip a few years ago to Cody, UXU Ranch and Yellowstone Park in Wyoming USA. Riding the Absaroka Range of the Rocky Mountains in the Shoshone National Forest was one of the best experiences ever and we did a lot of riding. Yellowstone Park is a treasure all by itself.

Precious few Colorado ranches can boast of private elk, deer, moose and bear hunting on literally thousands of acres, plus five trophy trout ponds and lodging that is “turn-key ready” for guests, but Whistling Elk Ranch has them all. Set in a mix of mature lodgepole pine, aspen and open meadows, Whistling Elk Ranch sweeps upward from 8500 to 9700 feet at the foot of rugged 10,957-foot Owl Mountain. Operated in recent years primarily as a guest ranch and fishing property, Whistling Elk has experienced minimal hunting pressure. Healthy herds of elk, mule deer and moose wander the ranch and in the adjoining National Forest. Black bear and mountain lion also prowl the ranch, providing additional hunting opportunities. Whistling Elk Ranch has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the state’s finest stillwater trout fishing properties. Rainbow trout grow rapidly in five food-rich lakes ranging from three to five acres. Many four- to eight-pound fish have been hooked, with float tube and pontoon boat fishing being most productive. Small streams and springs could be developed to feed additional ponds as well.

Improvements on the ranch are superbly tailored to a guest ranch operation. In addition to an owner’s house with a detached two-car garage and a ranch manager’s house, a large lodge and six smaller cabins are available for guests. The recently-constructed lodge is particularly impressive, with two master suites, a large commercial kitchen, outdoor hot tub and accommodations for ten. The cabins vary from recently remodeled to rustic. At full capacity, Whistling Elk can accommodate 50 guests. The possibilities for operation as a guest ranch, hunting and/or fishing resort, corporate retreat or camp are legion.
