A rare gem lies undiscovered on the eastern flanks of the 12,000-foot La Sal Mountains near Moab, Utah. A surprising mountain retreat hidden in the midst of Utah’s redrock country, the La Sal Ranch sweeps across nearly 2,000 spectacular acres at elevations from 9,000 to nearly 11,000 feet. Stands of aspen and spruce/fir forests, large meadows and quiet glades, create a diverse landscape ideal for healthy populations of resident elk, mule deer and other wildlife. Originally homesteaded in the early 1900’s, the La Sal Ranch has remained essentially undeveloped since then, with the exception of a few historic cabins and two access roads. The potential for developing this remarkably scenic property into a guest ranch, hunting and fishing lodge or recreational retreat is excellent, or it could be preserved as virtual wilderness through means of a conservation easement. The wealth of possibilities for the La Sal Ranch is as breathtaking as its mountain setting.

Nearly completely surrounded on four sides by National and State Forest lands, the La Sal Ranch provides a critical piece of wildlife habitat in the La Sal Mountains ecosystem. The ranch controls the approach to much of the eastern side of the La Sals, and offers virtually private access to the lovely timberline basins below Mount Tomasaki and Manns Peak. The La Sals are renowned for both trophy mule deer and elk hunting, with some especially fine bulls and bucks taken each year. Wild turkeys, mountain lions, black bears, coyotes and bobcats also roam here. Rare Colorado River Cutthroat trout have been documented in nearby Roc Creek and may survive in the waters on the ranch as well, as Deep Creek is a tributary of Roc Creek.

Some of the most astounding scenery in the United States lies within an hour’s drive of La Sal Ranch, ranging from the windswept peaks above treeline to echoing redrock canyons. Thus, diverse recreational opportunities abound. Mountain biking, horseback riding, four-wheeling, snowmobiling and cross country skiing are all possibilities both on the ranch and nearby public lands. Moab, a bustling small city and the recreation center of southeastern Utah, is only a little more that an hour’s drive. Canyonlands Airport serves Moab, and renowned Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are nearby. To the northeast lie the Colorado communities of Gateway (30 miles) and Grand Junction (90 miles). I argued with a friend about it not being nearly as romantic as the propaganda suggests. It’s mostly a lot of dirty hard work. The fortunate few big game hunters who have been privileged to visit the OX Ranch in the Laramie Mountains have discovered that Wyoming Territory is alive and well here. Completely surrounded by other private land, the OX Ranch controls almost 10,000 acres (4,812 deeded, 5,000 leased state and BLM lands) of ideal mule deer and elk habitat of proven productivity. Giant bucks grossing from 180 to over 200 Boone and Crockett points and bulls scoring from 350 to over 400 call this piece of unspoiled Wyoming Territory home, leading one state Game and Fish official to observe, When you hunt the OX you have a chance to take something truly spectacular. Spectacular has included Wyomings state record bull elk, which was an OX animal.

Water changes everything on the OX Ranch. Dotting the hills of the OX Ranch are over 40 seeps and springs and one year-round stream that are the secret to maintaining the large herds of deer and elk on the property. The Old West lives at the OX Ranch. Indian artifacts are found throughout the ranch, and tipi rings can still be seen at select locations. Legendary outlaw Tom Horn reputedly used the ranch as one of his hideouts, thanks to its numerous springs. Finally, one of North Americas few diamond mines was located a few miles southeast of the ranch, in the same geological formation that exists on the OX!

Although a trip to the OX Ranch takes you back to Wyoming much as it was in the 1870s, you wont have to lay out a bedroll under the stars (unless you want to). Improvements include a comfortable three-bedroom home with deck and an additional hunting cabin (housing up to four), and ranch facilities for handling 300 pair of cattle. Good fences and stock ponds exist throughout the property.
